COMMONspace

Collaborating with Snap Out Of It (SOOI) in COMMONspace, Rebar explores San Francisco's privately owned public open spaces (POPOS). Using the Planning Department's map describing the location of these fourteen unique sites, COMMONspace explores these spaces in terms of accessibility, surveillance, and other explicit rules. Rebar and SOOI activate these public spaces through a series of paraformances: performance actions that test each site's implicit social codes and engage public participants. Paraformances begin as playful actions by single individuals and culminate in full-scale, 'flash-mob' style occupations that increasingly engage the attention and participation of accidental audiences. Documentation of the site evaluations and paraformances will be published on-line to raise awareness of these spaces and inspire debate regarding their role and function as a part of San Francisco's commons.
