Teaching Artist: Community Arts Internship Program

Southern Exposure seeks a part-time contract Teaching Artist for our Community Arts Internship Program, new for Spring 2016

The Community Arts Internship Program (CAIP) gives young people the opportunity to exercise leadership skills and participate in their community by exploring relevant social and personal issues through visual arts. CAIP is organized by Southern Exposure in collaboration with local community-based youth organizations. Serving a broad range of underserved youth, CAIP is designed to provide youth interns with valuable job training in arts organizing and community engagement. The weekly workshops will guide youth through the process of formulating an idea, researching and investigating the topic, designing an action plan and implementing a community based arts project. The final project will be presented to the public at Southern Exposure in May 2016.

About the Job: The CAIP Teaching Artist is responsible for leading two workshops per week (Tuesday and Thursday from 4-6 PM) from January through May 2016. In collaboration with the AIE Program Director, the Teaching Artist will develop a curriculum that explores topics and concerns central to youth participants’ daily lives and the individuals in their community, producing a final project to be exhibited in May 2016.

Qualifications:

  • A practicing visual artist, with experience in arts organizing and community based art projects including but not limited to: installation, site-specific work, social practices, video, and other forms of visual art
  • Teaching experience with youth ages 14-21, particularly youth with special needs
  • Experience developing arts-based curriculum with an emphasis on collaboration
  • Good communication skills
  • Experience working collaboratively
  • Highly responsible and comfortable taking initiative
  • Spanish and/or Chinese language proficiency a plus

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the AIE Program Director and partner organization site staff to design and implement workshops and curriculum for youth participants
  • Lead weekly workshops
  • Collaborate with 8-10 youth participants to integrate their ideas into the final project
  • Gather materials and resources for projects
  • Bring in relevant guest speakers and coordinate field trips for youth
  • Prepare and install project for final exhibition
  • Maintain a positive, productive and engaged classroom environment, including set-up and clean-up

    • No more than five minutes of video hosted online (please include a link for viewing to Vimeo, Youtube, your own website, or any applicable video hosting domain).
    • Please include a descriptive list explaining each sample and include links. Projects and work developed with youth are encouraged!
  • Curriculum Proposal: Please submit a one-page curriculum proposal that provides an overview of a possible project for the Community Arts Internship Program. Include the target community and how your proposed project will directly involve this community, a general timeline or progression of activities and a description of the final product. Please also include what you hope students will learn and accomplish through participating and completing your project. (It is strongly recommended that artists review past AIE projects before applying).
