Yarno

Yarno, 2017
This is a painting of one of the puppet characters in "Karen," a movie I made last year.
Kate Rhoades' videos, paintings, and publications probe the absurdity of the commercial, academic, and institutional facets of art. She deploys puppets, over-acting, cartoons, and slapstick to contrast the seriousness of the situations being analyzed. Her work has been exhibited at the Recology Artist in Residence Program in San Francisco, Trestle Gallery in Brooklyn, and other venues, alleys, and hotel rooms across the US and Canada. She is one of the 2018 recipients of the Eureka Fellowship from the The Fleishhacker Foundation. She has also presented videos in the San Francisco International Film Festival and the Santa Fe International New Media Festival. Rhoades received a BFA from the Columbus College of Art and Design, and an MFA from Mills College. She is currently working on a new installment in her comic book series, Kate and Katy with her partner and co-author, Katy Kondo.
