Education Program at Downtown High School

SoEx’s Artists in Education Program partners with Downtown High School in Potrero Hill to build a screen printing studio and to run a year-long workshop to help foster community artists, promote skills and make a positive impact on youth and their communities. Students from Downtown High School have been participating in the after-school silk screening program with teaching artist Erik Parra and artist assistant Ivan Lopez. The workshop integrates elements of photography, graphic design, color theory, and drawing and focuses on personal symbolism and symbols that speak to larger communities. Students analyze silk-screening designs related to political, historical and social movements. The class initiates a school-wide contest to reinvent the school mascot. The most relevant design will be chosen as the actual logo for the school and will be printed on t-shirts that will be distributed throughout the student body. A final show and party will take place at Downtown High School in Room 10 on December 17, where there will be artwork on display, refreshments, and votes will be placed!
