M.A.P.S. Metaphors As Possible Solutions

Mission Voices Summer 2007

M.A.P.S. Metaphors As Possible Solutions

Southern Exposure's Artists in Education Program presents the 12th annual Mission Voices Summer (MVS) in collaboration with CELLspace/Mission Urban Arts after school program, the Boys & Girls Club of San Francisco; Columbia Park, and the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House Summer in the City Program. This summer, lead artists include filmmakers Katherin McInnis, Camilo Salazar Prince, and Vanessa Woods. Artist assistants include David Huff, Seth Lower and Kelly Seldan and youth leaders Shyla Jackson, Verenice Lopez and Alexandria Tesoro in addition to over 20 youth participants.

This year's theme, M.A.P.S. Metaphors As Possible Solutions, asks youth to examine San Francisco neighborhoods, each other and the materials of image making to address issues that are both local and global. Collaborative projects that reference early cinema, narrative and documentary film, and historical films and videos about San Francisco will support community building and offer students a foundation for their own expression. This summer, youth participants from diverse neighborhood organizations will use film and video to create innovative works that map, reflect, and re-envision their lives.

The goal of Mission Voices Summer 2007 is to provide workshops to teach youth to use video and film as a tool to express their creative voices by sharing their ideas, interests, and ambitions collaboratively through a creative project that is presented to the community. The summer workshop runs for 6 weeks, 2 days a week, and culminates with a major public presentation of work with a debut screening called the Grito de la Mision. This year, the Grito will take place at The ROXIE New College Film Center on Saturday, August 18, 2007 at 12:00 PM.
