Southern Exposure, the Columbia Park Boys & Girls Club, and Loco Bloco collaborate to create a visual presentation for the Carnaval procession in San Francisco on May 27, 2007. Lead Artist Joshua Short, assistant Robin Frohardt and youth participants from Columbia Park will create work that represents the diverse and eclectic character of the Mission District. A semester-long workshop will familiarize participants to the Mardi Gras Indians, Caribbean African Diaspora traditions, Carnaval in Trinidad and Tobago, and concepts of kinetic and interactive art. Participants will make parade visuals such as puppets, costume and float elements, flag design, streamer throwers, water cannons, and inflatable sculptures. In the spirit of the multicultural tradition of Carnaval and Mexican Loteria card designs, youth will simultaneously gain an insight into their role as community members of the Mission District and the importance of the Carnaval tradition.
