This semester Southern Exposure’s Youth Advisory Board (YAB) focuses on the practice of curating, and approaches this skill as a collaborative creative process similar to art making. This class explores and test the limits of what an exhibition can be, investigating alternative production methods in order to support and nurture the development of critical cultural producers. The semester is divided into four main projects, beginning with researching exhibition content, developing thematic connections between artists, and selecting artists for an exhibition. Students then investigate the process of developing an audience through a variety of media including catalogs, posters, and social media networking. While exhibition preparation is in process, YAB students create a collaborative piece of their own which that highlights the learning processes from the semester. During the final phase of the semester students install the exhibition, with special attention to logistical solutions for successful presentation, and communication of the conceptual underpinnings of the show.

This exciting project will culminate with an exhibition that will run in conjunction with Southern Exposure’s juried exhibition, Boom, with a joint opening reception on December 10, 2010, from 7 to 10 PM.
