Lien Truong’s exhibition Portrait of a Family features paintings that explore the structure and reality of contemporary families in America’s demographic melting pot. As opposed to historical family portraits where individuals are painted in distinguished settings, Truong chooses to paint her subjects life-size on canvases devoid of background or social elements. Depicting two generations of an actual family, these paintings challenge viewers to question their own value system as they attempt to understand relationships that defy boundaries of gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and age.
