Josephine Huang
Miss Josephine’s Boudoir
July 8-25, 1992
Opening Reception: Fri, July 10: 6-8 pm.
In Southern Exposure’s mezzanine gallery will be Miss Josephine’s Boundoir, another process-oriented changing installation by Josephine Huang. Working with soft sculptures in the form of Mexican wrestling masks/bondage masks and garnments, Huang presents herself as the artist/laborer, bringing a self-described ‘sweatshop’ to Southern Exposure. Each day, the artist will work in the gallery, sewing masks in the midst of a display environment. Her installation mixes commodity and toil, constraint and fashion, the feminine act of sewing with the underlying brutality of the masks.
