Please join us on Friday, July 13th for the opening of Green Book, the 2018 Juried Exhibition. New Photography and photo-based work by Bay Area artists of color representing San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Napa, Marin, and Sonoma Counties will be on view.

Green Book explores the uncompromising visual language of communities of color and the structural underpinnings that increasingly restrict their movement through areas with rapidly growing white populations. The included artists introduce a metaphorical guide to freedom from heteronormative and eurocentric standards for being in public space. Their images and video, steeped in lived experience and cultural memory, seek to upend the legacies of colonialist attitudes and constraints. Green Book is named for the Jim Crow era guidebook detailing routes of safe passage for African-American travelers. The exhibition addresses similar frictions of being a racialized body amid dwindling community, voiced by Bay Area image-makers.

Juried by Ashley Stull Meyers, the Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Director and Curator of the Art Gym and Belluschi Pavilion at Marylhurst University.

Now in its 27th year, the Juried Exhibition exemplifies Southern Exposure’s mission and our commitment to supporting new, innovative, risk-taking contemporary visual art practices.
