Mission Voices Summer Youth Program presents Emerged Under Covers. In summer 2025, students in residence at SoEx’s gallery utilized an array of mediums and materials to explore mending — of self, of story, of the weight we carry. Through layers of fabric, pattern, collage, painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation, they reflect on themes of care, labor, inheritance, and the histories we pass down and piece together.

As part of the program, students collaborated with guest artists Cordy Joan and Gaia Wu of the Transmissions Quilts Project, co-creating a communal quilt that reflects a shared practice of mending and meaning-making.

Emerged Under Covers is a testament to what unfolds when we create together — not in spite of what we carry, but because of it.
