Shirley Carter
Disassociation
October 9-November 7th, 1992
Opening Reception: October 9: 6-8 pm.
Disassociation features the paintings of Shirley Carter. Her work weaves together her experiences as an African-American lesbian artist with a sense of African-American history and ancestry. On canvases constructed from used money bags sewn together on her 1951 Singer sewing machine, the work incorporates imagery of a personal, political and personal nature. Each painting is a ritual of past and present, of self, family and ancestral heritage.
