Yoshiko Shimano

Centers: Woodcut Prints

January 7 - February 5, 1994

Opening Reception: 6:00 – 8:00 pm January 7, 1994.

In Centers: Woodcut Prints, Yoshiko Shimano takes the traditional Japanese art form of woodcut prints in a new, modern direction. Working in massive scale, she carves her blocks with a chainsaw in addition to the traditional use of chisels. The scale and violent nature of carving with a chainsaw belie the subtlety and depth of the work’s surface. Shimano’s works are concerned with landscapes and her physical and spiritual surroundings. The artist states that her work allows her to ‘forget this world of external identities such as nationalities, class or status, and to become just part of the nature.
