Michael Hall

…the things we are/were beauty too…

January 10 - February 8, 2003

Opening Reception: Friday, January 10, 2003, 6:00 – 8:00pm

Michael Hall’s paintings combine found imagery and iconography in an altered context, bringing new meaning to pre-existing forms.  …the things we are/were beauty too… consists of new paintings that explore these issues and influences.  By using a personal visual vocabulary that is at times conscious or subjective, he adopts the methods of the original artist in order to gain a personal connection with the source.  Hall pulls from a variety of references inclusive and outside of his culture, representing a multi-directional draw of his interests.  Painting in appropriated “styles”, Hall is able to apply a variety of methods to emphasize the contrast between the imagery and meaning. Each image brings its own unique history to the painting, and it’s often the collision of these histories and associations that influence the viewer’s interpretation.
