Invisible-5 Presentation & Panel Discussion
A presentation by Amy Balkin & panel discussion with Kim Stringfellow, documentary photographer; Bradley Angel, Founder of Greenaction; Marie Harrison, Bayview activist; and moderator Jeannene Przyblyski, art historian and cultural geographer.
Invisible-5 is a two-CD self-guided audio tour along the I-5, between Los Angeles and San Francisco that uses the format of a museum audio tour to guide the listener along the highway landscape, mixing elements of critical tourism, sonic experiment, audio documentary, and investigative journalism. Drawing from oral histories, archival sound, found sound, recorded music, and field recordings to I-5 investigates the invisible toxic landscape of the I-5 corridor through the stories of people and communities fighting for environmental justice along California's major North - South corridor.
Accompanying the presentation is an exhibition in Southern Exposure's OVERLOOK Project Space: photographs by Kim Stringfellow, audio clips of the tour, and informational materials from collaborating organizations.
Invisible-5 is made possible through support from: the Creative Work Fund, the Center for Public Practice at the San Francisco Art Institute, and the Journal for Aesthetics and Protest, and the many individuals and communities involved in the I-5's embattled history.
