FALL 2010 TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES

1 PART-TIME ARTIST CURATOR, 1 PART TIME ASSISTANT ARTIST CURATOR (2 OPENINGS)
Southern Exposure’s Youth Advisory Board
Job Description

Southern Exposure’s nationally recognized Artists in Education (AIE) program brings together diverse youth, artists, schools and organizations in a dynamic series of innovative programs. AIE offers youth opportunities to learn critical, artistic, vocational, and cultural experiences beyond the traditional school environment. It also offers professional teaching opportunities for local emerging artists to become arts educators, extending their practice into the community. Sparking a dialogue on contemporary artistic practice and sociopolitical issues, AIE demonstrates the role of artists in society and reflects the conceptual thinking from our exhibition programs to provide new means of expression for youth. With the decrease of art taught in the public schools and the lack of positive, creative outlets for youth, AIE fills a crucial need in the community.

Southern Exposure is seeking two Artist Curators: 1 PART-TIME ARTIST CURATOR, 1 PART TIME ASSISTANT ARTIST CURATOR for its Youth Advisory Board (YAB) program. YAB gives young people the opportunity to exercise leadership skills and participate in their community by exploring relevant social and personal issues through visual arts. YAB is organized by Southern Exposure’s Artists in Education Program in collaboration with local community-based youth organizations. The program bridges neighborhoods and cultures by pairing local artists with teens.

Two Instructors, along with Southern Exposure’s Artist in Education Program Manager, will collaborate and work with approximately 15 - 20 teenagers this fall to facilitate a YAB curated exhibition of youth art works that will be on view to the public at Southern Exposure. The exhibition will be based on a socially relevant theme that will be identified by YAB students based on research, field trips and discussion. Teachers will facilitate skills in exhibition design, curatorial research, installation and planning. Students will select a youth artist to work with and will collaborate to curate a group exhibition.
